PREFACE

Klaus Fröhlich
Chairman Study Committee A3

CIGRE does not only present itself as a powerful organisation in the field of electrical power – it also offers a great opportunity to exchange, disseminate and receive information on technology and electric power systems on an international level. There is thus a unique opportunity to meet and make friends with experts in the field from all over the globe. CIGRE’s mission is not only to be a hub for information exchange on the highest technical level but also to be a source of technical information for students and those engineers who are not very deeply involved in the development of electric power technology and electric power systems. In this context, the new strategic plan of Study Committee A3 (High Voltage Equipment) envisages a greatly enhanced activity in the holding of workshops, colloquia, symposia and tutorials – if possible worldwide. In the name of SCA3 I should therefore like to express my most sincere appreciation to the National Committee of Bosnia-Herzegovina for the kind invitation and for all the effort they had to put in to host this colloquium, which will be augmented by a tutorial on High Voltage Circuit breakers and other High Voltage Equipment. Very topical issues such as asset management are to be discussed. The latest developments in switching technologies and fault current limitation will be presented as well. Managers, students and engineers from adjacent disciplines will be addressed too, not only specialists. There is thus a unique opportunity provided to learn about the forefront trends in the field.

The tutorial will be held by carefully chosen lecturers who are well known in the international electric power community. The most topical insight into high voltage breaker technology and switching techniques will be provided. Topics of practical orientation such as life management and IEC standardisation are to round off the proceedings. It has to be emphasized that this is a rare opportunity to find so many established and acknowledged engineers and scientists assembled in one place for a single event – with a roundtable discussion as a grand finale which will allow interactive communication with these experts.

Technical tours and evening events will round off the technical programme and give a further opportunity to learn and to meet and make friends. One can be sure that the CIGRE Colloquium/Tutorial in Sarajevo, a town deeply steeped in history over the centuries, will be an event to look forward to with great pleasure and interest. Those who have already decided to attend are cordially welcomed. To those who have not yet made their decision, I extend my sincere invitation to come.
